Military Hospital Field Trip

Getting our students on a tour of a local hospital is impossible these days with lawyers concerned with patient confidentiality and regulations about cleanliness. This has hampered our efforts to expose our students to the many health professions that work in a hospital. Classroom instruction is nice, but getting students out into the workplace to see these jobs in action is a critical component of any school-to-work/career program.

We recently found a way around all that by utilizing our local military hospital. We took forty of our advanced Health Occupations students to a nearby military hospital to see the health professionals in action.

The students had a walking tour of many specialized locations in the hospital including the baby delivery rooms and their extensive lab where CSI junkies would feel right at home.

The students saw medical personnel working their regular jobs, which is so essential for our students to see. Students had the opportunity to talk to the health professionals about their job and what lead them to their career choice.

The military wants to recruit our best students, and we want to get students into the workplace to experience real working conditions. I think it’s a win-win for everyone.

If you were a student who wanted to go into a health profession and the only hospital that opened its doors to you was a military hospital with lots of friendly faces and promises of college tuition assistance, where do you think you would go after high school?

Contact your local military recruiters and tell them that you would like to get your students to see military careers that don’t involve carrying a gun. There are plenty of them out there, people just don’t know about them.

Well, at least the way that I see it. Let me know what you are thinking, and stop by again soon for more of my ramblings.
